If Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) wins the Emmy for Best Drama Actress, she’ll be the first African-American to prevail in that race. While that statistic may be surprising, what’s even more shocking is the lack of African-American nominees and winners throughout Emmy’s 64-year history. Of the more than 700 Emmys awarded to performers, only 36 Emmys spread across 14 categories have gone to African Americans — that’s 5%. Besides Best Drama Actress, they have been shut out of Best Drama Supporting Actor and Best Comedy Guest Actress, too.
